Death Row and other thoughts.

Before we discuss Suge & company, I want to apologize for being MIA lately. Granted, I always disappear around this time of year because I hate the cold and turn into (more) of a misanthropic hermit, so I'll spare you the excuses. I've just been busy...in mostly a good way -kind of a great way, actually.

Lent is just around the corner - are you guys giving anything up? I'm doing my traditional giving up sweets, but this year I'm switching it up a little bit and depriving myself of dairy, too. Of course this has nothing to do with Beyonce looking hot as all get out on the cover of Sports Illustrated or the fact that I may have back-ordered the swimsuit she sports on the cover and need to look at least 1/3 as good as she does in it.

Of course not. Nothing, nothing at all. You know me, I'm all about piety.

Also, I have a blog up at Arabisto, should you wish to check that out. I've been neglecting my blogging duties over there, as well. At least I'm an equal-opportunity slacker. Thanks to my editor/Arabisto's founder, Nadia, for being so understanding. She rocks.

Anyway, yesterday my new friend and I were watching some low-budget documentary on the rise and fall of Death Row Records. Considering that it probably cost all of $29.72 to make, it was pretty well done. Some of you might remember when I met Suge Knight, the man behind the empire, back in 2004ish. I think he was in between jail stints at the time. His presence itself is frightening and not just because he's a big guy. He just has this aura that strikes fear into pretty much everybody's heart as soon as he enters a room. Once he speaks, some of that initial terror dissipates because he has a slight speech impediment and his voice is kind of on the high side, but until he opens his mouth you're shaking in your boots (stilettos, whatever). He wanted to know how old I was. I told him 12 and ran away. Literally ran away. Now, I don't run and especially not in heels, so you can imagine just how scared I was. But in addition to being frightening, he was also a smart man who managed to fuck-over the world's biggest fuck-over artists to get to the top. That has to be respected. One thing the documentary did a good job of doing is highlighting just how great the label could have truly been, had Suge's enormous ego not gotten in the way. If you're the man behind a shady empire, you can't have your ass on the cover of The Source. It is a shame that Jimmy Iovine got to profit $400 million in large part because of the hip-hop dynasty Suge et al. created and he did little to cultivate.

Then I fell asleep at 10pm. Because I'm just that lame. And I'm getting ready to do it again. Later!
